The PPGEC/UFRPE congratulates Prof. Dr. Joaklebio Alves da Silva, egress of the program, for the Award HONORABLE MENTION IN THESIS, edition 2023, by the Thesis entitled "ETHNIC-RACIAL CRITICAL EDUCATION FOR SCIENCE TEACHING: DECOLONIZING PATHS IN INITIAL TRAINING OF BIOLOGY TEACHERS", defended in the Graduate Program in Science Teaching, under the guidance of Profa. Dr. Monica Lopes Folena Araújo.
The honorable mention was announced by the Pro-Rectory of Post-Graduation of the Federal Rural University of Pernambuco at the event commemorating 50 years of Post-Graduation at UFRPE, on August 18, in the Salão Nobre.
The thesis of Joaklebio Alves was defended in June 2022 and aimed to analyze the contributions and limitations of the insertion of the study ofRacials in the initial training of teachers/ as biology as a foundation for a new theoretical perspective defended by the teacher, in his doctoral study, named Ethnic-Racial Critical Education. According to the author, "the thesis that was outlined in the decolonization of teacher training consists in the defense that science education has necessary subsidies to promote an Ethnic-Racial Critical Education and the effectiveness of this educational processDuring the initial training of teachers/ professors of Sciences and Biology from the approach of studies that configure ethnic-racial issues in Brazil, and the role of education and teaching of Sciences in combating racism structured in the school and social" (SILVA, 2022, p. 10).
This is the first PhD thesis defended in the program whose object of study is explicitly focused on discussions about ethnic-racial relations in Science Education, more precisely in Biology teacher training. PPGEC is pleased with the award and also congratulates Prof. Dr. Monica Folena for the research guidance.
